How to Specify Fishing Hooks for Wholesale Orders

A hook size on a purchase order leaves several things unsaid. It does not fully describe the gap, shank, eye or wire. Those differences become obvious when the hook is fitted to a soft bait or supplied as a replacement for a lure, often after the buyer has already approved a price.

For a wholesale order, define the hook’s job and the dimensions that make it suitable. Use the size designation to identify the model, then add enough detail to prevent a visually similar substitute from becoming an unapproved change.

Begin with the rig and intended load

Ask whether the hook is for an unweighted soft bait, a jig, natural bait or a hard-lure replacement. Identify the intended line and tackle class and the fishing environment. These details help narrow the required geometry and construction without claiming that a single wire thickness is right for every application.

For a soft bait, fit the actual body to the sample hook. Check where the point exits, whether the body stays straight and how much space remains when the bait compresses. A long bait may still have a thin body, while a shorter creature bait can need considerably more clearance. Bait length alone is a weak basis for choosing a hook.

Record the geometry that matters

Specify gap, shank length, overall length, wire diameter and eye dimensions using an agreed drawing or measurement method. Identify an offset point or shank, barb configuration and eye orientation where relevant. A photograph helps, but it is not a substitute for dimensions when suppliers are comparing tooling.

Gamakatsu’s EWG worm-hook page identifies features including the extra-wide gap, eye and forged construction. [1] Its product description is a useful example of separating geometry from a simple size number. For your own order, use a drawing or approved reference rather than assuming another supplier’s size designation means an exact match.

Treat wire and finish as separate decisions

Wire thickness, material and manufacturing process all belong in the discussion. A thicker-looking hook is not automatically the right answer for a lighter rig. Ask the supplier how the proposed construction fits the application, and request evidence for any strength claim that influences the buying decision.

Likewise, identify the finish rather than writing only black or saltwater grade. Mustad’s Kaiju treble description names its DuraSteel finish and an eye intended for heavy-duty split rings. [2] That is a product-specific example of a detailed description. It does not establish equivalent corrosion performance for another hook with a similar color.

Agree test methods before comparing results

Request a controlled bending or pull test if strength is a purchasing criterion. The fixture, loading direction and definition of failure need to be recorded. A hook that opens progressively and one that fractures create different findings; a single peak-force figure can hide that distinction.

For corrosion comparisons, agree the exposure method, duration and evaluation criteria with a suitable test provider. Identify the tested finish and production revision. Do not translate an accelerated test duration directly into a number of fishing seasons unless a defensible correlation exists for the stated use.

Sharpness claims also need a defined basis. Avoid using fingers as a test instrument. A qualified provider can propose a repeatable penetration check with a specified medium and fixture. Combine that evidence with visual examination for bent points, burrs and obvious coating defects under the agreed inspection plan.

Investigate a price change before changing the hook

Suppose a reorder quotation offers a cheaper hook that appears nearly identical. Compare the drawing, wire, finish and manufacturing reference before accepting it. Then fit it to the actual rig and review any relevant test evidence. A different component may be entirely suitable, but the decision should be recorded as a change. Keeping the old and new samples together helps prevent a later customer complaint from becoming a dispute about which version was supplied.

Evaluate the retail pack and reorder reference

Count the hooks in selected packs and check that the size and finish match the label. Confirm that points remain contained during normal handling and that the package opens without scattering its contents. Bulk bags and retail packs should be evaluated separately because they create different handling conditions.

For replacement trebles, fit the samples to the intended lure and split rings. Check freedom of movement, clearance between hooks and any effect on the lure’s resting behavior or action. A heavier replacement may change the finished lure even if the size label appears suitable. Keep that assembled reference with the component specification.

Before committing to a broad range, decide which hook patterns your customers can distinguish and use. A clear core selection with dependable replenishment may be easier to sell than many near-duplicates. Request quotes against the same drawing, finish, pack count and test basis, then retain the approved sample for future batches.
