China fishing tackle price benchmark
Direct answer
A Chinese fishing tackle quote is comparable only when 4 things are stated: the unit, the order quantity, the price basis (FOB a named port, or EXW factory), and what the price includes. Cheery Supply Chain publishes reference bands per sub-category on this page, aggregated at build time from sampled listings, with unit and sample size on every row, plus an MOQ band for each type. Bands are benchmarks, not offers, and they do not apply where a specification falls outside the sample.
Key facts
- Price bands below are aggregated from sampled listings; each row states the unit and the sample size.
- A quote without a stated basis (FOB or EXW) and quantity is not comparable with any other quote.
- MOQ is set by setup and tooling cost, not by material, for printed or moulded products.
- Median figures are shown alongside bands because bands hide the distribution.
Buyers rarely lose money on the headline price. They lose it on scope: a quote that turns out to be EXW when the other one was FOB, or a run length half of what the price assumed.
How do I compare two Chinese tackle quotes properly?
Normalise both quotes to the same four things before comparing a single number:
- Unit — per piece, per set, or per carton. Mixed units are the most common error.
- Quantity — a price at 2,000 pieces is not a price at 50,000 pieces.
- Basis — FOB a named port, or EXW factory. Add inland freight, export clearance and terminal handling to an EXW price before you set it beside an FOB price.
- What is included — tooling, print plates, packaging, testing and certification are frequently excluded from the unit price and invoiced separately.
What are the reference price bands by sub-category?
| Sub-category | Sample size | Reference price band (US$ / unit) | Median low | MOQ band (pcs) | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishhook | 9 | 0.07 – 2.40 / piece | 0.65 | 100 – 2,000 | Fishing Accessories |
| Spoon & Spinner | 6 | 0.31 – 6.00 / piece | 1.25 | 50 – 500 | Fishing Lures |
| Other Hard Lure | 6 | 0.56 – 12.04 / piece | 2.95 | 20 – 500 | Fishing Lures |
| Soft Lure | 6 | 0.20 – 3.85 / piece | 1.55 | 50 – 1,000 | Fishing Lures |
| Hard Lure | 6 | 1.85 – 3.20 / piece | 2.60 | 100 – 100 | Fishing Lures |
| VIB | 6 | 0.24 – 2.50 / piece | 1.39 | 100 – 500 | Fishing Lures |
| Minnow | 6 | 0.37 – 3.17 / piece | 1.40 | 50 – 500 | Fishing Lures |
| Metal Jig | 5 | 0.97 – 2.01 / piece | 1.39 | 100 – 200 | Fishing Lures |
| Fishing Rod | 3 | 9.15 – 132.55 / piece | 28.05 | 20 – 100 | Fishing Rods |
| Crankbait | 3 | 0.30 – 0.85 / piece | 0.66 | 200 – 500 | Fishing Lures |
| Octopus Skirt | 3 | 0.08 – 2.80 / piece | 0.98 | 100 – 2,000 | Fishing Lures |
| Fishing Accessory | 3 | 0.62 – 60.00 / pack | 9.62 | 5 – 200 | Fishing Accessories |
The table is computed at build time from the listings in our [product catalogue](/products/) (62 sampled listings). It is a benchmark, not a quote: the basis and the exact specification are confirmed per supplier.
Why does MOQ matter more than unit price?
For anything printed or moulded, setup cost sets the floor — not material. That has three consequences:
- A stock colourway can often be produced in a fraction of the MOQ of a custom one, because the setup was already paid by someone else.
- Paying tooling as a separate line item usually drops the per-unit MOQ more than any negotiation.
- Comparing a printer's MOQ with a trading company's MOQ compares two different things: one is quoting setup, the other is quoting a sub-supplier's minimum.
What does FOB and EXW actually change?
| Cost element | EXW (Ex Works) | FOB (Free On Board) |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery point | Factory gate | Named port, loaded on board |
| Export clearance | Buyer | Supplier |
| Inland freight to port | Buyer | Supplier |
| Terminal handling | Buyer | Supplier |
| Typical effect on the quoted number | Lower number, smaller scope | Higher number, larger scope |
What should be in a quotation you can act on?
Ask for these eight fields, in writing, and reject anything that omits them:
- Product and specification, with the parameter that drives cost identified
- Unit and quantity the price applies to
- Price basis, naming the port or the factory
- Tooling and plate costs, stated separately or explicitly included
- MOQ per colourway and per specification, not one global MOQ
- Lead time for a first order and for a repeat order
- Certification or testing included, and who pays for testing
- Validity period, and what triggers a re-quote
Where do these numbers come from?
The reference bands are aggregated at build time from the fishing tackle listings in our catalogue, and every row states its sample size and unit. We do not publish a price we cannot trace to a listing, and we do not average across different units — a per-piece price and a per-set price never enter the same row.
For supplier-level pricing with a confirmed basis, apply for a trade account or send us a specification.
What makes two quotes incomparable?
| Missing field | What it hides | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Whether the figure is per piece, per set or per carton | Ask for the unit in writing on the quotation |
| Order quantity | Which volume the price assumes | State the quantity you would actually place |
| Basis | Whether freight, clearance and handling are inside the number | Require FOB with a named port, or EXW factory |
| Hardware | Whether the hook and ring are the ones you specified | Name the hardware on the quotation |
| Colourway tolerance | The range you will accept on a repeat order | Agree a measured tolerance before the first run |
What should you do before you compare anything?
- Normalise the unit across every quote.
- Normalise the order quantity to the volume you would actually place.
- Normalise the basis to FOB with a named port.
- Place each figure against the band for its sub-category.
- Treat anything far below the band as a different specification, not a bargain.
What should every quotation contain?
- The unit: per piece, per set or per carton.
- The order quantity the price applies to.
- The basis: FOB with a named port, or EXW factory.
- The MOQ in pcs for that specification.
- The lead time in days for a repeat order, not a first order.
- The hardware named, if the product carries hooks or rings.
What moves a band between two builds?
- Material cost: resin, salt content, blank grade, metal for hardware.
- Order quantity: the same tooling across 5,000 and 50,000 pcs prices differently.
- Colourway count: each extra colourway is a line change, not a new mould.
- Packaging: retail packaging changes the unit cost and raises the MOQ.
- Freight: the basis decides who pays it, and rates move within a 90-day window.
Which numbers are not comparable, and why?
- A per-piece figure against a per-set figure —2 different units.
- 1,000 pcs against 50,000 pcs —the tooling is spread across 50 times the volume.
- FOB against EXW —4 cost lines sit inside one and outside the other.
- A 2024 quotation against a current band —material and freight have moved.
How big is the Chinese fishing tackle export market?
How big is the Chinese fishing tackle export market?
| Measure | 2024 | 2023 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| All fishing tackle (HS 9507) | US$1.93 bn | US$1.77 bn | +9.0% |
| Fishing rods (HS 950710) | US$0.66 bn | US$0.62 bn | +6.5% |
| Fish hooks (HS 950720) | US$0.11 bn | US$0.11 bn | flat |
| Destination countries served | 196 | 197 | -1 |
| Largest single destination | US$546 M | US$445 M | +23% |
Rods account for about 34% of the total and hooks about 6%. The largest single destination takes roughly 28% of the 2024 total — which is why the export markets already on a supplier record are worth reading before you ask for a price.
Who supplies the United States?
| Source | 2024 import value | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| China | US$538 M | 59% |
| Japan | US$74 M | 8% |
| Malaysia | US$53 M | 6% |
| Viet Nam | US$42 M | 5% |
| All other sources (65 countries) | US$199 M | 22% |
| Total US imports | US$906 M | 100% |
The United States bought US$906 M of fishing tackle under HS 9507 in 2024 from 69 source countries. China supplied US$538 M of it — 59% of the total, and roughly 7 times the next largest source. That concentration is why specification discipline matters more than factory discovery: the factories are not hard to find, the comparable quotation is.

Frequently asked questions
Why do Chinese supplier prices vary so much for the same product?
Mostly because the quotes cover different scopes. A lower number often excludes inland freight, export clearance or terminal handling, or assumes a much larger run length. Normalising to one Incoterm and one quantity usually collapses most of the apparent spread.
What is a normal MOQ for fishing lures from China?
For stock body shapes and stock colourways our sampled listings quote 50 to 2,000 pieces, depending on sub-category. A new mould or a new colourway raises the floor because setup cost has to be recovered somewhere. The MOQ band column above shows what our sampled listings quote.
Is the cheapest price the best price?
No. The expensive failures in tackle sourcing are hardware substitution, colour drift and sample-to-production gaps. A quote that is 8% higher but names the hook, holds a colourway tolerance and inspects incoming hardware is usually the cheaper programme.
Are these prices binding?
No. They are reference bands for comparison, not offers to sell. A quotation issued against your specification, with a stated basis and validity, is what governs a transaction.
