How is the bait retrieved?
Slowly, and mostly with the reel. Bassmaster describes a medium to medium-slow retrieve that makes the bait swim with a subtle side-to-side roll, with gentle rod shakes that barely pop the head up, and notes that one bait in the same line-up wanders without any shake at all.
In detail
Megabass describes the presentation as control through rod input and line tension rather than through a paddle tail, and describes a bottom-strolling variant worked tight to the bottom instead. That retrieve is why the bait has to track straight at very low speed.
